Start by separating the two questions
“Can I provide clearer information for AI tools?” and “Will this make my business appear in AI search?” are different questions. An llms.txt file can organise selected information, but that does not establish a ranking benefit or guarantee that a particular assistant will use it.
As checked on 29 October 2026, Google’s guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode says established SEO practices still apply and that new AI text files or special markup are not required for inclusion. Useful, accessible pages and internal links remain the foundation.
What llms.txt is intended to do
The llms.txt proposal describes a Markdown file containing background information and links that help agents use a website. Its current proposal also discusses clean Markdown versions of detailed pages. It is guidance for a machine-readable entry point, not a replacement for your public website.
For a small agency, a helpful file might explain the business in a short paragraph and point to services, contact information and policies. It should not contain passwords, unpublished customer details or instructions pretending to grant an agent permission to take actions.
Create a small draft and verify every line
- Write a factual business summary using the same scope as the website.
- Select a few authoritative pages rather than every navigation link.
- Give each destination a short description of what it contains.
- Generate and review the Markdown.
- Open every linked URL and check that it is public and current.
- Publish the file only after a human checks the claims and links.
The free WebHolick llms.txt Generator builds a draft from your supplied summary and links. It does not prove that the descriptions are true, automatically create Markdown copies of every page or establish adoption by an AI provider.
Maintain the pages behind the file
Imagine that a service is discontinued but the file still recommends it. Making the summary easy to read would only make the outdated information easier to repeat. Add the file to your content review checklist when services, URLs or policies change.
If time is limited, fix missing service details, broken links and inaccessible pages first. Treat llms.txt as an optional publishing experiment with a maintenance owner. For SEO work, judge progress using relevant search and enquiry evidence, without attributing a change to one file unless the evidence supports that conclusion.
